The Revalidation Support Unit (RSU) have designed, developed and now manage a suite of online resources which support doctors and designated bodies through the medical appraisal and revalidation process:
The Medical Appraisal Revalidation System (MARS) has been the single appraisal management system for all doctors with a prescribed connection in Wales since 2014. It is used by over 7,500 doctors to facilitate their annual appraisal and to meet revalidation requirements. MARS is continuously reviewed to ensure it remains fit-for-purpose.
Orbit360™ is a purpose-built end-to-end patient and colleague feedback system developed for all doctors with a prescribed connection to an NHS designated body in Wales. Orbit360™ offers an intuitive user interface and GMC-validated feedback forms to ensure the doctor’s collated report satisfies the requirements of revalidation. Its adaptive platform will enable future use by other professions in the future.
In addition to these resources, we support two other national systems:
The Dental Appraisal System (DAS), developed in collaboration with Welsh Government, health boards and the British Dental Association (BDA), is an end-to-end system that allows community dentists (CDS) to book appraisal meetings and compile supporting information via a secure online platform. It aligns with their terms and conditions of service and is based on a similar concept to MARS.
Wales Professional Review for Optometry (WPRO) is an online peer review mentoring system to support newly-qualified optometrists. It is currently in a pilot phase and will be evaluated to determine whether it demonstrates a proof of concept to MARS and whether the platform can be adapted for use as an educational support tool.
Trained staff within RSU provide a dedicated Service Desk service to support all our online systems and answer any user queries.
