Healthcare Science Programme

In March 2018 Welsh Government, with the support of NHS Wales, published the ‘Healthcare Science in NHS Wales – Looking Forward Framework’. Supported by the Minister for Health and Social Care, it shows a number of things that are designed to lead Healthcare Science into the future and make the most of the opportunities within ‘A Healthier Wales’ (our long-term plan for health and social care).

The framework also sets out our vision and direction for the healthcare science workforce in Wales.

As a result of this framework, the Healthcare Science Programme was formed. We have been managing it since 1 October 2020. The aim of this programme is to create a place where Healthcare Science can flourish. We can do this by:

  1. building universal recognition of the profession
  2. promoting the different career choices
  3. and supporting healthcare scientists to work together.

The team work in partnership with the profession to develop this programme, including:

  • Healthcare Science Network
  • Directors of Therapies and Health Science
  • Welsh Government Health Science policy team
  • Healthcare science professions across NHS Wales.

In 2022, the work of the programme was developed further by creating five workstreams aligned to the pillars of the Looking Forward framework. The five workstreams are:
