Core psychiatry training in Wales is structured as follows:
12 months general adult psychiatry
one x six month placement in old age psychiatry
one x six month placement in either learning disability psychiatry or CAMHS.
two x six month placements in specialties such as forensic psychiatry, rehabilitation, adult liaison and substance misuse.
Your CT1 placement will be confirmed at time of appointment and CT2 and CT3 placements are allocated by the Core Training Programme Director at a later date. You are able to state a preference for which specialties you would like to undertake and we are usually able to accommodate trainee wishes.
If appointed to a CT1 post in south Wales you will complete all your core training in the south and likewise, if you are appointed to a post in north Wales your CT2 and CT3 placements will also be in the north.
From November 2015 the school has offered an MRCPsych course. Please see the ‘Trainee’ section of the School of Psychiatry website for further details regarding this.
Recruitment for psychiatry specialties is via health education north west and further information can be found on the National Psychiatry Recruitment website.
The training programme director for core psychiatry training in Wales is Dr Marque Fernando. He is happy to be contacted via email to answer any questions potential applicants to the training programme may have.
