Placements in primary care

There are a range of placement opportunities available in primary care below.

We’re also working hard to develop more, with help from your local academy.

Medical student placements

Medical placements in primary care are arranged by Cardiff and Swansea University. To find out more, please contact Cardiff University via UGMedicGPRecruitment@cardiff.ac.uk or Swansea University via a.pavey@swansea.ac.uk

Physician Associate placements

Physician Associate placements in primary care are arranged by Swansea and Bangor University. To find out more, please contact Swansea University via a.pavey@swansea.ac.uk. Detail from Bangor will be coming soon.

Pharmacy student placements

Pharmacy student placements in primary care are arranged through the undergraduate clinical placement facilitators. For more information, please contact our pharmacy team via HEIW.FPUPP@wales.nhs.uk.

Nursing student placements

We’re expanding placements for nursing students in General Practice.

If you'd like more information on this or you represent a GP practice that would like to host a nursing student, contact our Primary Care Team via HEIW.PrimaryCare@wales.nhs.uk.

We also have FAQs for nursing placements in GP practices for both placement hosts and students.

NHS graduate placements

The NHS graduate programme can now offer placements in general practice. This will provide NHS managers and leaders of the future with an understanding of primary care to take forward in your role. To find out more, please contact HEIW.PrimaryCare@wales.nhs.uk.

Foundation doctor training

Within the foundation programme, general practice placements are offered in two ways:

  • as longitudinal placements during the first year (F1), in which one trainee attends for one day a week across 12 months.
  • or as a standard placement in the second year (F2), in which trainees will rotate into the placement every four months throughout the year.

In both cases, a named GP will provide clinical supervision for the year. Placements are generally arranged between September and December, prior to the following August start dates. To find out more, please contact HEIW.FoundationSchool@wales.nhs.uk.

If you represent a GP practice that would like to host a foundation placement, please contact HEIW.GPTraining@wales.nhs.uk.

GP specialty training
