HEIW statement regarding sexual misconduct in surgery

Published 15/09/2023

We were deeply shocked and saddened to read the findings of the study into Sexual Misconduct in Surgery. We want to be very clear; postgraduate doctors in training are critical and highly valued members of the NHS Wales workforce and like all NHS staff must be treated with respect. There is absolutely no place in the workplace environment for misogyny or sexual misconduct of any nature.

We have contacted trainees in Wales offering help and support through our professional support unit and school of surgery for anyone who needs it. Any concerns reported to us are treated in confidence and taken extremely seriously, with action taken promptly in liaison with employers and other agencies.

We will work collaboratively with trainers, trainees and our partner organisations including Health Boards, NWSSP, Royal Colleges and the BMA to ensure the recommendations of the independent report are implemented, and a culture within the training environment in Wales is one of safety and compassion.
