Career support

Navigating a medical career can be challenging. At these times even the choice to be a doctor can come into question.

When career issues surface in conversations, we discuss feelings and plans openly and without any judgement.

Our medical careers web pages help trainees with aspects of deciding, exploring and rethinking career paths. There are also resources for trainers to underpin and guide careers conversations.

Our UK medical career pathways infographic is a visual roadmap of the journey from medical school to post-CCT. View this along with the accessible career navigation guide.  Use the dynamic map  to find brief information about each career arrival point.

Workshops

Our self-directed online module, Managing a Medical Career can be accessed on the HEIW e-learning platform using NHS details, or by creating an account if necessary.  It guides residents through reflective and interactive components to help:

  • navigate options
  • evaluate current motivation and priorities
  • clarify decisions and
  • look for jobs and relevant resources

Course activity outputs and the completion certificate can be used in portfolio evidence of CPD.

Our group workshop also covers models and approaches to medical career planning.   It can be delivered in-person, via local education centres, or remotely on Teams.  It is suitable for faculty as well as residents. The session outlines key stages in career planning, drawing on established career theory and models, and covers:

  • approaches to interpreting and navigating the medical career pathway
  • career challenges most encountered by trainees (and which supervisors might be approached about)
  • a well-recognised four stage approach to career planning and career conversations
  • sources of information and resources to help with different career support needs.
