Mentoring

Mentoring creates supportive learning relationships and helps build a culture of reflection, guidance, and compassion across training. 

Through mentoring, residents/residents/trainees and trainers can explore challenges, gain perspective, and develop their own solutions with the support of an experienced colleague. 

Mentoring support from the PSU 

The Professional Support Unit (PSU) can support individuals and teams who are interested in developing mentoring within their area. 

We offer: 

  • Advice and guidance on setting up mentoring schemes 

  • Support for both resident/trainee-led and programme-led initiatives 

  • Workshops for mentors and mentees across a range of settings 

Mentoring workshops 

We provide short, practical workshops (in-person or virtual) designed for: 

  • Residents/Residents/trainees and trainers 

  • New or experienced mentors and mentees 

  • Specialty or programme-specific groups 

Workshops can be tailored to your context and typically cover: 

  • The principles and purpose of mentoring 

  • Mentoring in a healthcare setting 

  • Roles, expectations, and boundaries within mentoring relationships 

  • Core mentoring skills and approaches 

  • Practical tools such as SMART goal-setting, the GROW model, and the Johari Window 

Professional standards 

PSU practitioners work in line with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council Global Code of Ethics, ensuring mentoring support is delivered to a high professional standard.
