Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) Optometry held their first in-house training event for Optometrists in Ty Dysgu on Friday 12 April 2024 using specialist equipment which will allow small group training sessions to be delivered to optometrists from HEIW headquarters. The skills workshop element of these sessions requires the use of the equipment to examine closely the features of the eye in order to detect and manage pathology.
Optometry practices on the high street now offer additional patient services as part of a new Optometry contract. This enables eye conditions to be managed in the community instead of hospitals and prevents unnecessary onward referrals.
The training is essential and mandatory to provide educational assurance for NHS Optometry Contract patient services across Wales.
Sasha Macken and Laura Heylin – HEIW Optometry Tutor’s stated
‘We are very pleased to have delivered training to Optometrists from Ty Dysgu. After many years of delivering events in other premises, it was a pleasure to showcase Ty Dysgu facilities. The event was a success and the eleven attendees showed great enthusiasm with the face-to-face sessions. We look forward to more Optometry events in HEIW headquarters.’
