What is a Call Handler?

Call Handlers provide reassurance to patients, family members, friends or members of the public in a medical emergency when help is needed most. A shift is never predictable and full of challenges.

Is a Call Handler the right career for me?

Call Handlers deal with 999 emergency calls from the public and healthcare professionals to make sure that the right help gets to the patient as soon as possible. As a Call Handler, you will need excellent communication skills and be able to remain calm when under pressure.

What do Call Handlers do?

Call Handlers take essential details about the patient’s condition and exact location by logging them onto a computer system. Call Handlers may have to give basic first aid advice by phone in life threatening situations.

What career progression opportunities are available for Call Handlers?

There are opportunities to progress as a Shift Leader or Duty Control Manager. Some Call Handlers also progress to operational roles, as either Urgent Care Assistants or Emergency Medical Technicians.

How do I become a Call Handler?
