Delivering Service Improvement: The Case for Consultant Pharmacists

Target audience

This resource is written for

- NHS Executives, Directors, Assistant Directors and commissioners with responsibility for delivering improved population health outcomes,

- Professional Leadership Bodies, seeking to understand the role of consultant pharmacists in the multi-professional team, and

- Clinical Networks and Pan-Cluster Partnerships who are planning more diverse skills mix in their healthcare system.

Purpose of the resource

The purpose of this resource is to improve awareness of the consultant pharmacist role and stimulate conversations about the service areas where consultant pharmacist leadership is needed, to improve population health outcomes.

This resource is a product of research, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement undertaken by Health Education and Improvement Wales between August 2023 and January 2024. It represents a first step, under Action 12 of the Strategic Pharmacy Workforce Plan, to, ‘Agree and implement a Consultant Pharmacist Strategy for Wales’.
