In addition to the foundation programme director, each foundation doctor is allocated an educational supervisor at the start of each year, and a clinical supervisor for each 4 month placement. This will be a registered trainer who will supervise and guide their foundation trainees.
During most first placements, the educational and clinical supervisor will be the same trainer. When moving onto the second and third placements, a new clinical supervisor will be allocated for each placement. For those undertaking a General Practice LIFT programme, the Educational Supervisor for the year will instead be the GP Supervisor. Other LIFT programmes will have an additional Clinical Supervisor during the year to represent the LIFT aspect.
Foundation doctors are expected to meet with their educational supervisor at the start of their foundation year, and then at the end of each 4 month placement.
The educational supervisor will liaise with the clinical supervisors (and other colleagues) throughout the year to review their trainee's progress and will maintain an overview of their development within the training programme.
Further information on the role of educational and clinical supervisors can be found in the UKFPO Reference Guide.
