Peer review support forum

The independent prescriber peer review support forum is available specifically for newly qualified Independent Prescriber (IP) optometrists practising in Wales.

Why we developed the support forum

After qualifying as independent prescribers, optometrists often find their new role overwhelming.

More support at this early and crucial stage in their prescribing journey can help to build confidence.

What the support forum includes
  • Multi-professional online learning in the evenings
  • Five 90 minute sessions facilitated by an experienced IP optometrist, covering case discussions on commonly seen conditions and guidance on prescribing
  • A warm, supportive environment to share your experiences with similarly experienced colleagues which can help to revalidate your knowledge and build your confidence
  • Initial participation from pharmacy colleagues who provide pharmacy-specific guidance on prescribing to gain a better understanding of each other’s roles and promote collaborative working
  • An IP tool kit post qualification with valuable resources to support newly qualified IPs as they begin their practice and identify opportunities to expand their scope of practice
  • Continued Professional Development (CPD) specialty IP points with each session, supporting ongoing professional growth.

Who can join the forum

All newly qualified IP optometrists who practice in Wales and can register their interest to join the next forum.

Or you can request further information by emailing HEIW.Optometry@wales.nhs.uk.

Testimonial from cohort one

‘Thank you once again for creating the support forum. It has been extremely helpful in allowing me to feel more confident in my practice but also appreciate that being an independent prescriber is a learning process and that other peers go through the same difficulties when beginning.’
