In December 2024, the Allied Health Professions (AHP) Workforce Transformation Team at Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) conducted a survey to explore the progression of AHP leadership across Wales. The survey received an impressive 160 responses across twelve different AHP disciplines across Wales, marking significant interest in the development and recognition of AHP leadership roles.
Occupational Therapist Heather Ellis from Hywel Dda University Health Board was randomly selected as a winner from the survey draw and was presented with her prize, “Compassionate Leadership” by Michael West.
Louise Steer, the Clinical Lead of AHP Workforce Transformation at HEIW, is currently analysing the survey data and information to better shape the future of AHP leadership in Wales. HEIW aims to identify key factors that influence progression by examining these themes. Reinforced by the survey, this comprehensive analysis will cover the qualitative and quantitative data, focusing on the barriers to leadership, enablers, opportunities, and access to development.
Nicky Thomas, Associate Director of Workforce Transformation AHP for HEIW said:
“Surveying and engaging AHPs at all levels, across specialties about their leadership development needs, ensures any actions taken are relevant, effective, and truly empower the AHP leaders of the future”
The outcomes of this survey will inform future leadership pathways and training tailored to the needs of each AHP profession. This work will identify the existing challenges and enhance the visibility of development opportunities for aspiring and current AHP leaders. The number of responses received demonstrates the appetite to nurture leadership within the AHP community, ensuring a robust and dynamic healthcare workforce for the future.
