Online resource to support workforce planning for the Welsh language launched

Published 10/09/24

Heath Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has launched a new training resource to support workforce planning for the Welsh language across NHS Wales.

It forms part of their work to support the Welsh Government framework for promoting the Welsh language in health, social services and social care, ‘More than just Words’.

Available on HEIW’s digital learning platform, Y Ty Dysgu, the online learning resource includes a short video to explain why workforce planning for the Welsh Language is important for ensuring quality patient care. It also features guidance and links to Welsh Language courses for anyone wishing to learn or improve their Welsh Language skills.

The training is aimed at anyone who has responsibility for ensuring that their workforce has the right skills to meet patient and service user needs for the Welsh Language.  The training also supports continued learning, development and growth.

The people of Wales engage with health and care services when they are at their most vulnerable. Therefore, ensuring they can do so in their preferred or native language, is an integral part of health and care to achieve better clinical outcomes for patients.

Assistant Director of Strategic Workforce Planning at HEIW, Clem Price, said:

“The online learning resource has been designed to support managers to assess and plan for the level of Welsh language skills needed to meet their local patient requirements. It provides all the information they need, together with practical examples, in one accessible place.”

Welsh Language Manager at HEIW, Huw Owen, added:

“Working through this resource will give you very firm foundations for answering the needs of Welsh Language Standard 110, which asks Health bodies to create a plan which shows how they will address the language needs of patients in clinical situations.”
