HEIW launches Learning disabilities (Tier 2 enhanced) e-learning course

The Learning Disability Education and Training Framework for Healthcare staff in Wales was published in 2021. It sets out to ensure healthcare staff have the necessary knowledge and skills to identify and meet the needs of people with learning disabilities.

In response to this, Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) and Social Care Wales are thrilled to launch the Learning Disabilities (Tier 2 Enhanced) Course.

Suitable for all health and social care professionals working in learning disability services, the course is available on Y Ty Dysgu and aims to:

  • build on foundation level learning of learning disabilities
  • improve how mainstream NHS services identify and respond to the health needs of people with a learning disability
  • ensure reasonable adjustments are made to reduce diagnostic overshadowing and reduce preventable adverse events and avoidable deaths.

Tom Narbrough, Strategic Programme Manager at HEIW, says:

“This training builds upon the foundation level training as part of the wider Learning Disability Education and Training Framework for healthcare staff in Wales. It is designed to equip our staff with an enhanced level of skills to better respond to the needs of people with a learning disability. This will help to ensure that people with a learning disability have a positive experience when they need support.”

The course builds upon the foundational knowledge acquired through the Paul Ridd Tier 1 Foundation mandated training (available on ESR or Learning@Wales) and includes five modules:

  • Module 1 - understanding learning disability
  • Module 2 - the health needs of people with learning disability
  • Module 3 - recognising and improving barriers
  • Module 4 - communication
  • Module 5 - understanding and responding to behaviour
