Working as a Trainee Clinical Photographer in a medical illustration department will provide the learners with the opportunity to receive on the job training and for their competencies to be assessed in the clinical setting. Learners will engage in online learning experiences consisting of synchronous sessions with the HEIW Clinical Photography Education Team and asynchronous learning materials. The qualification also offers the opportunity for in-person teaching and learning, group work, individual tutorials, and self-directed learning.

As part of the application process learners will be required to present a copy of their degree certificate to evidence their qualification.
As a work-based learning qualification, individuals will need to apply for a Trainee Clinical Photographer job role in one of the medical illustration departments in Wales. These positions are advertised on the NHS jobs website during the spring/early summer months, with an annual intake starting every September.
Learners develop knowledge and skills of clinical photography practice to enable future employment as a clinical photographer in the NHS. On successful completion of the qualification, learners are eligible to apply for the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) registration and the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI) Professional Membership.
