The primary base for the course is the Dental Postgraduate Unit at Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil. This is located at the rear of the main building, near the entrance to the maternity unit. There is a sign outside the building (Unit 3), indicating the Postgraduate Unit. There are a number of large, free car parks on site.
There is a coffee shop and canteen in the hospital, which both serve refreshments.
The Dental Postgraduate Department has numerous facilities which are used regularly for Dental Foundation Training and General Professional Training, as well as a wide variety of taught and hands-on courses for all of the dental team. We have computer facilities and up to twelve phantom head places with two fully equipped lecture rooms including video conferencing facilities. A comprehensive library is present on site and Foundation Therapists are welcome to borrow any of the books and audio/visual equipment available. We encourage all Educational Supervisors and Foundation Therapists to use these facilities throughout the year – please check with the Training Programme Director on availability.
A number of study days will be held via online platforms, where appropriate.
Please note, other Postgraduate Centres will also be used for study days, such as the Dental Hospital, Heath Park, Cardiff or Llandough Hospital, together with outside venues.

There are two options:
1. Park and Ride
There is now a Park and Ride service operating from Cardiff Bay with a regular free bus service to and from the hospital which is working well.
AS PARKING ON SITE IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT THIS MIGHT BE THE EASIER OPTION. THERE IS NO NEED TO REGISTER FOR THIS SERVICE.
2. Parking on Site
Parking on the UHL site is closely monitored by Parking Eye using an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera system, regulations are strictly enforced and penalties applied. However, you should have no problems if you register in advance to use the STAFF car parks on the day of the course. To do this please email Parking Eye at: uhl@parkingeye.co.uk copying in CAV_UHB.parking.office@wales.nhs.uk. Please enter “UHL Database” in the Subject field of your email. A map showing the locations of the car parks is attached below. Make sure you use your NHS email address to email them.
Give them your car registration number, state the date that you will be attending the course (and course name) and ask to have your car registration details added to the database for that day by using the following text: “Please add the following Vehicle Registration to the UHL Database for Friday 30th June 2023”.
Please do not use Car Park 8 (which is for designated staff only), the patient/visitor car parks as these have a four-hour limit or the residents parking area behind the Education Centre.
The Education Centre is not able to take responsibility for any penalties that attendees receive due to failure to comply with Parking Eye’s regulations. The attached site plan shows the Education Centre, which is in the large redbrick building on your right as you drive through the main gate into the site (17 on the site plan). This plan also shows the car parks which, you will see, are some way past our building further into the site.
PLEASE DO ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME FOR WALKING BACK TO THE CENTRE AS WELL AS FOR FINDING A PARKING SPACE.
HOSPITAL FACILITIES
There are places in the main hospital where you can buy lunch and refreshments which include a restaurant, coffee shop and kiosk in outpatients’ department.
