Building AI Skills in NHS Wales

Preparing the healthcare workforce for the future of AI

The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare is transforming the way we diagnose illnesses, manage patient care, and streamline NHS operations.

However, AI can only be effective if healthcare professionals have the right knowledge and skills to use it safely, ethically, and responsibly.

We have conducted an AI Landscape Review to assess the current state of AI education in NHS Wales. The findings are clear:

  • AI training is fragmented: Many healthcare staff lack access to structured AI education.
  • There is strong demand for AI learning: NHS professionals want to understand AI, but formal courses are limited.
  • HEIW is taking action: A new AI education strategy will support staff in developing AI literacy.

Bridging the AI skills gap

To ensure NHS Wales is ready for the AI-driven future, HEIW is developing:

What’s next?
  1. Finalising Course Content – Ensuring the AI education resource meets NHS Wales workforce needs.
  2. Exploring Costed Options – Identifying the best way to implement AI training at scale.
  3. Rolling Out Training – Preparing to launch AI learning resources on Y Ty Dysgu.
