Llandough Hospital developed a community orchard that surrounds the hospital. The project has been called ‘Our Health Meadow’. It is the first of its kind at a hospital site and benefits patients, staff, visitors and the wider community.
Fit for the Future is a sister project to Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s Health Meadow. The project takes place in Whitchurch, Cardiff and aims to make Velindre Cancer Centre the greenest hospital in the UK.
It has been designed to boost the well-being of patients and enhance biodiversity in the area by using green infrastructure.
Patients are also given green prescriptions. These are activities that involve nature such as tree planting, mobile making, and building wooden roundhouses.
There are also funded courses available for staff, such as the ‘Wellbeing in Nature Practitioner’ course. Smaller events like learning to grow vegetables are available too.
The feedback from the project has been overwhelmingly positive, and some patients have called it “lifechanging”.
