We have collected a range of workforce data for mental health and integrated it within a dashboard, this data collection is gradually expanding and currently covers the NHS Adult Mental Health workforce, we are beginning to collect data for the Child and Adolescent workforce and expanding the range of data to include head count. In the future we will be looking to integrate this data with our ESR dashboards so that we have a wider range of datasets. The dashboard has already been of use to colleagues across NHS Wales in order to look at trends. This work also won the HPMA Cymru Workforce Analytics award in 2024.

There are opportunities to deliver care differently which need additional skills and capabilities, different workforce models and new ways of working. Digital will play a key role in enabling and supporting that change. To inform this change there is a need to carry out some pre-work to understand the current landscape and identify
We are also funding workforce planners on a regional basis who will be offering bespoke workforce planning training for mental health services and planners. (link to workforce planning resource section)
We are working on bringing demand and supply modelling into our planning that is underpinned by improved data to support setting the direction for future workforce approaches and solutions. These will reach to the next 10 years based on a range of scenarios, research and horizon scanning as well as taking into account the plan’s existing successes and challenges. Through this process we will make recommendations which inform our approach to continue to drive our workforce development approach for mental health services after the initial period of the plan has ended.
