The Y Ty Dysgu (YTD) platform, developed by Health Education Improvement Wales (HEIW), has become a cornerstone for professional development, offering accessible, relevant, and impactful learning opportunities that directly enhance the quality of care throughout the country. With over 32,000 registered users since December 2022, it has quickly established itself as a trusted and widely adopted platform for learning and development across health and social care in Wales.
Championing Accessibility
Accessibility on YTD is about meeting learners where they are. The Care Navigation module, launched in June 2024, exemplifies this ethos. Designed for real-world scenarios, it guides learners to support patients and carers effectively, using clear, inclusive language and mobile-friendly design. Though still growing its audience, the module’s potential to empower is significant, especially for those new to digital learning or working in fast-paced environments.
Empowering Social Care
A flagship achievement of YTD is the Medicines Administration Training course, relaunched to meet HEIW’s accessibility standards. With over 1,400 users, this course equips social care workers with essential knowledge for safe medication administration; a fundamental aspect of quality care. The platform continues to evolve, with new modules in development on topics such as Personalised Medication Management, Acute Kidney Injury awareness, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Constipation in Learning Disabilities. These are crafted with input from subject matter experts like Emyr Jones (CAVUHB), ensuring clinical accuracy and practical relevance.
Advancing Mental Health Education
YTD’s mental health offerings are expanding rapidly. Courses tailored for professionals working with children, families, and vulnerable adults, such as CAMHS Supervised Modules and Open to All Modules, have attracted over 460 learners. These modules, updated with current Welsh resources, provide in-depth knowledge on child development, therapeutic engagement, and mental health services. The Perinatal Mental Health series, with 546 users, deepens understanding of maternal mental health complexities, while the NEST module, with 379 learners, promotes awareness of children’s rights and frameworks.
Additional modules, including DiADeM Cymru (dementia diagnosis), Learning Disabilities Tier 2 Enhanced, and Trauma Awareness, foster empathy and skill, helping professionals see beyond diagnoses to the individuals they support.
Supporting Specialised Skills
HEIW’s Clinical Photography Level 7 qualification exemplifies YTD’s commitment to specialised disciplines. Since its 2023 launch, two cohorts have completed the programme, with a third underway.
Lasting Impact
YTD now provides staff across health and social care with practical, job-relevant training, whether in medication safety, early detection of health issues, or understanding mental health. The platform’s rigorous Quality Assurance, led by Teresa Davies-Elvin (HEIW), ensures fairness and inclusivity. With guidance from experts like Emyr Jones (CAVUHB), Thomas Narborough (HEIW), Amy Lake (HEIW), and Trish Mathias-Lloyd (HEIW), YTD is more than a course catalogue; it’s a dynamic ecosystem, enabling professionals across Wales to feel more capable, supported, and confident in their roles.
As YTD continues to grow, its impact is clear: learning is not just happening, it’s making a real difference in the lives of healthcare professionals and patients in Wales.
