Following the landmark graduation of the first cohort of Level 7 Diploma holders in Clinical Photography, Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is celebrating the continued achievements and influence of its pioneering graduates. Since earning their diplomas, the Class of 2025 has not only advanced in their careers but is helping shape the future of clinical photography across Wales and the UK.
At a special event held in early December, graduates were joined by family, colleagues and tutors from across Wales to recognise their outstanding achievements and the significant impact of this advanced programme. Speakers included Martin Riley, Deputy Director of Education Commissioning & Quality; Chris Jones, Chair of HEIW; and Amy Lake, Clinical Photography Programme Manager, all of whom commended the cohort for their commitment, resilience and professionalism throughout the course. Chris Jones also formally presented certificates to the graduates.
David Smith, Clinical Photographer, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Said: “Pursuing the HEIW Level 7 Diploma in Clinical Photography has proven to be an immensely fulfilling journey. The structure of the program, which emphasises work-based learning, facilitated a seamless integration of theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical experience. This approach not only enriched my understanding of clinical photography but also equipped me with the necessary skills to navigate real-world scenarios effectively.
Upon completion of the course, I felt thoroughly prepared to transition into a qualified role, armed with both the knowledge and practical experience to successfully perform in the field.
As the course reached its conclusion, we were honoured to attend a presentation ceremony hosted by HEIW, attended by Chris Jones, the Chairman of HEIW, and Martin Riley, the Deputy Director of Education Commissioning & Quality, as well as our assessors and other professionals in the field of clinical photography.
This event served as a meaningful celebration of the collective efforts not only of us, the students, but also of all those who played a vital role in the success of the first year of the program. It was a moment to reflect on the dedication and hard work that contributed to our learning journey”.
Since completing the diploma, graduates have progressed into skilled clinical photography roles, with most securing positions within Wales. Their work has already achieved national recognition, and two graduates were selected to present as part of IMI’s prestigious New Voices programme, which spotlights emerging talent and innovative practice.
Chris Jones, HEIW Chair said “This first cohort has set an exceptional benchmark for clinical photography in Wales. Their professionalism, innovation and commitment have helped shape a qualification that is already influencing practice across the UK. We are immensely proud of what they have achieved, not only for themselves, but for the future of patient-centred visual healthcare.”
The programme’s impact has been further validated by an outstanding External Quality Assurance (EQA) report, which highlighted the high standards demonstrated by both learners and the qualification. Together, these achievements have firmly established the Level 7 Diploma in Clinical Photography as an industry-standard pathway, setting a new benchmark for excellence within the profession.
Congratulations to the Class of 2025, trailblazers for clinical photography in Wales.
