Strong medical training recruitment figures in Wales for 2025

Statement from Prof. Tom Lawson – HEIW Acting Medical Director:

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is pleased to announce strong recruitment outcomes for medical training programmes in 2025. Round 1 recruitment has achieved a 100% fill rate for core specialty and GP training, improving on the 2024 figures. Round 2 has also seen a notable increase, with an 89% fill rate for higher specialty training programmes compared to 81% in 2024.  Whilst there are still challenges in recruiting to some specialties these figures demonstrate a positive trend in most areas, which will benefit all communities across Wales.
