Qualification in Specialty (QiS) Standards for neonatal nursing in Wales engagement webinars

The Qualification in Specialty (QiS) for neonatal nurses is a post-registration education programme, building on pre-registration training. QiS equips nurses with specialist skills needed to provide safe, effective care to newborns and their families in neonatal services.

HEIW are working in partnership with the Neonatal Nurses Association and frontline neonatal nurses to standardise the Qualification in Specialty (QiS) across Wales. This work aims to ensure every neonatal nurse who completes a QiS programme is equipped with the same high-quality knowledge, skills, and confidence, no matter where in Wales they train or practise.

Currently, variations in the delivery and interpretation of QiS programmes across Wales can lead to inconsistency in training outcomes. This can impact workforce mobility and the overall experience of care for babies and their families. By standardising the QiS framework, we’re creating a consistent, high-quality foundation for neonatal nursing that supports seamless cross-boundary working and improved safety and care quality for patients.

This work directly supports nurses in practice by building a robust and transferable qualification that reflects the complexity and specialist nature of neonatal care. It also empowers nurses to move between services or geographical areas more easily, knowing their education and training are recognised and trusted nationally.

We are currently inviting neonatal nurses to have their say. A series of webinars are being hosted to share the draft standards and gather vital feedback from the workforce. Their voice is essential in shaping a framework that works in real-life clinical settings.
