New resource launched to enhance mental health support in urgent primary care settings

Published 1 December 2025

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has launched a new mental health support resource for the multi-professional urgent primary care workforce across NHS Wales.

The resource provides health and care professionals working within urgent primary care with centralised access to practical, evidence-based tools and guidance that can be used to help assess and efficiently respond to patient mental health concerns.

Designed to support the whole urgent primary care team, including, general practioners (GPs), advanced practitioners, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals, the resource will help to improve how mental health concerns are recognised and managed, supporting earlier intervention and more consistent care for those seeking support.

Free to access on HEIW’s digital education portal for health and care professionals, Y Tŷ Dysgu, this launch marks the first in a planned series of supportive resources for the urgent primary care team. Additional resources covering key areas, including women’s health and paediatrics, will be available on Y Ty Dysgu over the coming months.

The initiative forms part of the Urgent Primary Care Practitioner Framework, which was created to support the multi-professional urgent primary care team to develop their skills, monitor progress, and connect with colleagues across Wales to share best practice.

Hilary Rian, Clinical Lead for Urgent Primary Care at HEIW, said:

"Our new signposting resource has been created to enhance the quality of urgent care practice and contains trusted educational tools that support confidence, timely decision making.

“From triage to assessment and treatment, this resource contains accessible, high quality content to help the whole urgent primary care team develop their skills and make every contact count. Your commitment deserves resources that work as hard as you do.’’

Bianca Oakley, Clinical Lead for Same Day Urgent Care and Outreach Service - Ceredigion at Hywell Da Health Board said:

“A resource like this is hugely welcome. Urgent primary care can be a pressured environment, and having clear, accessible tools at our fingertips will really support the way we assess and respond to patient mental health needs.”
