Launch of new Foundation Mental Health Literacy and Trauma Awareness training

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) are delighted to launch the Foundation Mental Health Literacy (Level 1) and Trauma-Awareness courses.

The courses have been created in collaboration with a variety of mental health stakeholders across sectors including:

  • healthcare
  • social care
  • the voluntary sector

To that end, the course is designed to help all staff who work with people and would appreciate some additional knowledge on mental health and trauma.

The courses aim to foster a fundamental understanding of mental health and trauma, including:

  • recognising mental health conditions and how they can affect people
  • raising awareness about stigma within mental health
  • the landscape behind suicide and self harm
  • how to handle difficult conversations relating to mental health
  • an awareness of trauma at all ages and how it affects people’s lives
  • statistics about mental health in Wales.

The courses are designed to help staff feel more knowledgeable about mental health and more comfortable in talking to people about their situations.

Upon completion of the courses, staff should feel better equipped to help support people, signpost to resources and services and give appropriate advice when dealing with mental health.
