Launch of Allied Health Profession (AHP) UK Public Health Strategic Framework 2025-2030

Published: 22 January 2025

AHP leaders across the four nations are launching their second Public Health Strategic Framework published on the Allied Health Profession Federation (AHPF) webpages today. Building on the successes of its inaugural framework from 2019 to 2024, this collaborative effort has been strengthened by partners across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. This milestone reaffirms the critical role of AHPs in contributing to people’s health and well-being at all levels and outlines a dynamic strategy to drive positive change across the UK over the next five years, achieving the aims of a Healthier Wales.

Ruth Crowder, Chief Allied Health Professions (AHP) Advisor for the Welsh Government, said:

“I’m delighted that today we are publishing the UK Allied Health Professions public health strategic framework for 2025-2030. This has been developed through collaboration of colleagues throughout the four UK nations. The framework outlines how each Allied Health Professional in Wales needs to embed public health in their daily practice to improve the population’s health and wellbeing, reduce health inequalities and drive sustainable health care.  AHPs have a tremendous range of skills and can make a huge impact on our ambition to create a fairer, healthier Wales.”

Judith John, the national AHP Public Health and Prevention Lead at Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), played a pivotal role in shaping the framework’s engagement strategy and informing the strategy content. Her leadership involved briefing stakeholders across all four nations and ensuring the successful contribution from AHPs in Wales, 277 completing the survey to help define and shape the strategy. This foundational work has been instrumental to the overall strategy and represents a significant achievement for HEIW and the AHP Workforce Transformation Team.

Nicky Thomas, Associate Director of Workforce Transformation AHP for HEIW said:

"This foundational work has been instrumental to the overall strategy and represents a significant achievement for HEIW and the AHP Workforce Transformation Team. It is a hugely important piece of work to support our roles in delivering Public Health focussed practice to improve the health of our population and achieve the aims of ‘A Healthier Wales’. The work going forward will now focus on the actions required to implement it in Wales and build on the successful achievements of the previous strategy, led within this team.”

Launched on 8 January 2025, the impact report accompanying the 2019 – 2024 UK AHP Public Health Strategic Framework provides a comprehensive overview of AHP achievements across the UK. It highlights measurable progress made towards the framework's overarching aims while also emphasising the need to maintain momentum and reassess priorities to further advance the role of AHPs in public health. The full impact report can be found here: Allied Health Professions Federation

This second strategy highlights how AHPs in Wales can further drive meaningful change by prioritising prevention, early intervention, and reducing health inequalities for individuals, communities, and populations. The framework envisions a sustainable future where public health becomes central to every AHP role, with the transformative impact of AHPs on public health being fully recognised and valued. By empowering AHPs to collaborate in developing and delivering community-centred healthcare services, this vision seeks to enhance well-being, tackle disparities, and foster long-term improvements in public health.
