In the rapidly evolving world of healthcare, digital confidence is no longer optional, it’s essential. That’s why Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has developed HALI, the Healthcare AI Learning Interface, a ground breaking AI chatbot mentor designed to help healthcare professionals in Wales navigate the complexities of artificial intelligence with confidence and competence.
HALI is a smart, conversational AI tool created to support healthcare staff in understanding and safely applying AI technologies in clinical and operational settings. It’s not just a chatbot, it’s a mentor, a guide, and a learning companion tailored to the unique needs of the NHS Wales workforce.
HALI is accessed via Y Ty Dysgu, HEIW’s national learning management system, free at the point of access for the healthcare workforce in Wales: https://ytydysgu.heiw.wales/
Working with technology partner Thinqi, HALI has been embedded directly into the learning management system, ensuring that healthcare professionals can access AI training in the same space they already use to engage with other professional development resources.
HALI was born from HEIW’s 2025 AI Education and Skills Landscape Review, which emphasised the need for a “safe place” where every healthcare worker could experience AI first hand. HALI fulfils this vision by demystifying AI and fostering trust, competence, and curiosity.
The healthcare sector is increasingly adopting AI tools for diagnostics, patient monitoring, and administrative efficiency. However, a gap remains in training staff to use these tools safely and effectively. HALI addresses this challenge by:
As HALI officially launches today, it represents a bold step forward in digital transformation for NHS Wales. A first of its kind across the four nations, it’s a model that other health systems may soon look to replicate, combining cutting-edge technology with a deep commitment to education, safety, and patient-centred care.
HALI is more than a chatbot, it’s a catalyst for change and the first of a suite of AI mentors planned by HEIW. By embedding AI education into the daily learning journey of healthcare professionals, HEIW is ensuring that Wales leads the way in safe, informed, and innovative healthcare delivery.
Dr Alexander Aubrey, HEIW’s Clinical Lead for Artificial Intelligence and creator of HALI, said: "AI has the power to transform healthcare, but only if we equip our workforce with the right skills. By investing in AI education, we can ensure NHS Wales staff feel confident using these tools—leading to better patient care, improved efficiency, and a digitally skilled workforce ready for the future."
