We are proud to announce that two of our projects have been shortlisted for the prestigious NHS Wales Awards 2025.
The NHS Wales Awards celebrate excellence in quality and improvement across health and care in Wales. Organised by the Quality, Safety and Improvement directorate on behalf of NHS Wales Performance and Improvement, the awards highlight the work of teams who are transforming services and outcomes for the people of Wales.
We have been recognised in two categories:
These nominations reflect our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement in education and workforce development.
Newborn and Infant Physical Examination Cymru (NIPEC) project
“We are thrilled to see our teams recognised for their dedication to improving care and developing the future workforce in Wales. These nominations are a testament to the collaborative spirit and innovation that define HEIW.”
— Rebecca Boore, Associate Director for Workforce Transformation, Nursing & Midwifery, HEIW
"The development of high-quality educational resources for the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination Cymru (NIPEC) has had a transformative impact on clinical practice. These resources not only enhance the confidence and competence of professionals conducting the examination but also help ensure early identification of potential health concerns in newborns and infants."
— Dr Rachel Hayward (Consultant Neonatologist, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board)
“By working collaboratively with HEIW and colleagues across NHS Wales we have contributed to the development of evidence-based resources, ensuring that professionals have the skills and knowledge they need to carry out examinations confidently and competently.”
— Dr Heather Payne, Senior Medical Officer, Welsh Government
Nursing placements in general practice project
“High-quality, inspirational placements are critical to securing future primary and community care workforce pipelines. We are proud to have worked closely with General Practices, education providers, and wider neighbourhood services to enable student nurses to gain valuable experiences of primary and community care provision whilst working within multi-professional healthcare teams on their journey to professional registration.”
— Simon Cassidy, Head of Placement Experience and Improvement, HEIW
“I don’t think people really understand the role of General Practice Nurses. We need to show students how challenging the role can be, as well as the opportunities that come with the role.”
— Nikki Hayes, General Practice Nurse at Llan Healthcare
Finalists will now take part in virtual site visits with judging panels to explore our projects in more depth. Winners will be announced at a celebration and learning event on Thursday 18 November 2025.
