HEIW launches support programme for newly qualified dental nurses

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has announced the launch of a new, initiative designed to support newly qualified Dental Nurses (DNs) as they enter the workforce. The initiative is part of HEIW’s wider commitment to improving the quality of dental services and addressing workforce challenges in primary care across Wales.

The two-year programme that starts in Autumn 2025, is a structured preceptorship model tailored for graduates of the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) Diploma. This period of transition will offer mentorship, guidance, and hands-on learning experiences led by seasoned professionals, helping new dental nurses consolidate their knowledge, sharpen clinical skills, and build confidence.

“This initiative is not just about supporting individuals—it's about investing in the future of our dental workforce and, ultimately, patient care,” said Kathryn Marshall, Head of Dental Workforce Development for HEIW. “We recognise the challenges that come with transitioning from education into practice, and this programme provides the structure and support needed to help new professionals thrive from the very beginning.”

The initiative is a key part of HEIW’s Strategic Workforce Plan for Primary Care, which calls for a motivated and resilient workforce. By easing the transition into professional roles, the programme promotes early engagement and reduces the risk of burnout or attrition among new dental nurses.

The preceptorship also reinforces HEIW’s strategic priorities:

  • National Workforce Solutions: By adopting a coordinated, all-Wales approach to workforce development, HEIW aims to move beyond reactive solutions to more proactive, sustainable planning. This initiative addresses long-standing gaps and supports strategic workforce growth.
  • Workforce Transformation: The programme strengthens community and primary care teams, supporting patients with long-term conditions closer to home and improving preventative care at the grassroots level.
  • Excellent Education and Training: The initiative exemplifies HEIW’s commitment to modern, innovative training systems that are responsive to the needs of today’s NHS workforce.

The benefits of this new initiative extend across the healthcare system. Dental practices will see improved collaboration and skill utilisation within their teams. For the dental workforce, access to continued professional development fosters job satisfaction and improves staff retention—critical in the face of ongoing NHS recruitment challenges.

Most importantly, patients stand to gain from the enhanced quality and efficiency of care. With confident, well-supported dental nurses at the front lines, patients can expect safer, faster, and more compassionate service.

HEIW’s move represents a positive step forward in shaping a more robust, prepared and sustainable dental workforce in Wales.
