Published: 04/12/2025

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is proud to announce the launch of its new Motivational Interviewing (MI) learning resources, designed to empower healthcare professionals across Wales. (Please note you need to log in to Y Ty Dysgu for the link to work)

The official launch event was held online via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 3 December. Attendees had the opportunity to explore innovative resources aimed at strengthening person centred care through collaborative and meaningful conversations that inspire individuals’ motivation for change.

A highlight of the event was a case study, demonstrating motivational interviewing in action. This session showcased how healthcare professionals can use MI techniques to support people in making positive changes, focusing on practical strategies for engaging individuals, overcoming resistance and fostering self-motivation. We heard from an MI expert involved in developing the eLearning module,  Dietitian and certified Motivational Interviewing Trainer Orla Adams, who brings over 20 years of NHS experience to the discussion.

The event featured a live presentation, a sneak peek at the new resources, and a Q&A session with experts. All MI resources, videos and the eLearning module are hosted on Y Ty Dysgu, with registration open to all healthcare professionals. Those without an account are encouraged to Sign up - Ytydysgu Heiw for access.

Following the webinar feedback included:

Another excellent suite of resources from the team to support us all in practice. Thank you. Naomi Horne, Trust Retention Lead at Velindre NHS Trust

Thank you for the update and the links to eLearning. As always so useful to practice. Cath Perry, Diabetes Specialist Dietitian at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Rebecca Boore, Associate Director Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Transformation said, "These resources support the integration of motivational interviewing into practice, enhancing person-centred care and enabling clinicians to guide and sustain effective behavioural change."

Orla Adams, Registered Dietitian and certified Motivational Interviewing Trainer (MINT) commented "My hope is that these Motivational Interviewing learning resources spark a fire within you the same way that the first MI training did for me 20 years ago. It started a journey that has transformed my practice and the way that I am with the people I meet in my life."
