Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is looking for a new cohort of trainees to join its national General Management Graduate Programme for NHS Wales.

Now accepting applications for September 2024, the two-year, work-based programme is designed for aspiring future leaders of NHS Wales who want to influence and champion change to improve health and care services in Wales.

Trainees will complete a fully funded MSc in Applied Health Leadership and benefit from hands-on learning, mentoring and non-clinical training, enabling them to develop skills in management and compassionate leadership.

Participants will also undertake placements in Health Boards and Trusts across Wales, covering primary and secondary care, as well as corporate teams.

To apply, applicants must have or be predicted to receive a minimum of a 2:2 in any degree discipline, share the values of NHS Wales and be committed to a public service career path.

Current Graduate Trainee at Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, Oliver Watson said:

"I’ve been amazed at how much support I’ve received from managers, executive directors and peers. The programme provides ideal opportunities to develop leadership skills, ready for a future position in senior management.

Being part of the NHS Wales General Management Graduate Programme puts you in an incredibly privileged position, with access to fantastic opportunities from the very start of your career. In my first two months, I’ve had experiences ranging from riding out on an ambulance to attending exec leadership team meetings, as well as starting to take lead roles in projects that will improve patient care."

Graduate Programme Manager at HEIW, Claire Monks, said:  “Having a talent pipeline of future managers in NHS Wales is crucial.   Through this programme we are able to provide organisations with future compassionate leaders in various roles throughout Wales.  Attracting diverse and top-tier talent we are able to contribute to the overall success and growth of NHS Wales, helping to build a sustainable foundation for the future."
