AI is transforming healthcare – but are we ready?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already reshaping healthcare, from AI-assisted diagnostics to predictive analytics that help manage patient care. These innovations have the potential to save lives, reduce workloads, and improve efficiency across the NHS.

But our recent AI Landscape Review has revealed a critical gap in AI education across NHS Wales.

Without the right knowledge and skills, NHS staff could struggle to use AI safely, ethically, and responsibly, meaning cutting-edge digital tools that could transform patient care may go underused.

Bridging the AI Skills Gap

To ensure NHS Wales is ready for an AI-driven future, work is underway to develop:

  • A foundational AI education resource providing healthcare professionals with essential AI knowledge, ethics, and real-world applications.

  • Tailored learning pathways designed to support different roles, from clinicians to administrators.

  • AI-powered learning tools that use AI to deliver flexible, interactive training tailored to individual needs.

  • Collaborative learning by aligning with NHS England, academia, and professional bodies to share knowledge and avoid duplication.

Why AI Training Matters

Equipping NHS Wales staff with AI skills will:

✔ Improve clinical decision-making by supporting faster, more accurate diagnoses.
✔ Enhance efficiency by reducing admin tasks means more time for direct patient care.
✔ Ensure ethical AI use by helping staff critically assess AI recommendations and avoid over-reliance.
✔ Boost workforce confidence by ensuring AI is seen as a supporting tool, not a replacement for human expertise.

Dr Alexander Aubrey, Clinical Lead for Artificial Intelligence, said:
"AI has the power to transform healthcare, but only if we equip our workforce with the right skills. By investing in AI education, we can ensure NHS Wales staff feel confident using these tools—leading to better patient care, improved efficiency, and a digitally skilled workforce ready for the future."

What’s Next?

Plans are being finalised to develop and roll out AI training across NHS Wales, with costed options currently under review. Further updates will follow as NHS Wales takes the next steps toward a digitally skilled, AI-ready workforce.
