A warm welcome to our summer interns!

Published: 30 July 2024

On 8th July students from Cardiff University, University of South Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University and Swansea University joined us for the summer. We are very pleased to welcome them to Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW).

The 15 students are based in departments across the organisation including digital, planning and performance, allied health professionals (AHP) team, healthcare science, nursing, optometry, national programmes, future workforce, people and facilities and workforce & organisational development

The 8-week internship programme will involve them working on a variety of projects including digital marketing, sustainability, workforce planning and nursing career pathways to gain valuable experience and insights into working for NHS Wales.

Over the next few weeks our interns will be sharing their experiences in blogs and social posts. We look forward to hearing their perspectives.

This programme is extremely beneficial to talented undergraduates still in education or just completing their undergraduate programme by providing a bridge to a valuable employment experience. Opportunities to work within dynamic teams and being able to positively contribute to key projects across HEIW is a key attraction of this programme, coupled with the opportunity of a mentor to support the interns to apply their acquired knowledge and skills within a business environment.

The rewards to HEIW are also significant and include the attraction of talent, promotion of the organisation and NHS Wales as an employer of choice, and the benefit of up-to-date research, new models and fresh perspectives gained through the lens of our younger generation.

Claire Monks, NHS Wales Graduate Leadership Programme Manager and Amy Whitehead, Culture, Leadership & Succession Programme Support Manager lead the internship programme at HEIW and our graduate management programme. Claire said,  we're delighted to offer this experience to our interns to share how fulfilling and varied roles are within NHS Wales.

As a strategic workforce body we are passionate about providing opportunities for work experience and career advice to the future workforce. We hope that time spent at HEIW will encourage our interns to pursue a role within NHS Wales.
