Advanced Therapies

Get involved: help shape the future NHS Wales workforce for advanced therapies

Health Education and Improvement Wales is running a short survey for healthcare professionals working in NHS Wales who have current or anticipated involvement in advanced therapies such as gene therapies, cell therapies and tissue engineered products.

The findings will help us establish a baseline to inform workforce planning, education and training. This will support the safe and sustainable delivery of advanced therapies across Wales.

The survey is open until Wednesday 24 June 2026.

We would be grateful if you could complete the survey and share it with relevant colleagues within your networks.

If you’d like to get involved with supporting the workforce in relation to advanced therapies or to collaborate with us then please contact us.

What are Advanced Therapies?

Advanced Therapies are a rapidly evolving area of medicine that harness the power of genes, cells, and tissues to treat, manage, and potentially cure a range of diseases. These therapies, that are collectively referred to as Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) include:

  • gene therapies
  • somatic cell therapies
  • tissue-engineered products
  • combined ATMPs (where the therapy incorporates an integral medical device)

Advanced Therapies represent a major shift towards precision medicine, offering the potential to transform outcomes for patients across a wide range of specialties.

As this field continues to advance, it will increasingly shape how healthcare is delivered across NHS Wales. Realising this potential will require close collaboration between clinicians, scientists, educators, and policymakers to ensure these novel treatments are introduced safely, effectively, and equitably for all patients.
