Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) are very proud of the Genomics education programme we have developed with Genomics Partnership Wales to improve patient care across Wales.
As genome technology advances our understanding of diseases such as cancer and heart disease, we can adapt and modify the care that we give patients leading to better outcomes for them. This new learning aims to encourage staff working in areas including oncology, cardiology and paediatrics to study genomics that relates to their role and use that learning to improve patient care.
We were delighted to see the All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) recognised at the recent AHA Awards when Justyna Tull, Head of Technical Programme at the AWMGS received a recognition of excellent leadership.
Justyna has shown outstanding commitment to her calling. Justyna expertly balances various priorities of the lab's numerous clinical arms and their demands upon it's technical services, strategically deploying the lab's technical resources to meet clinical priorities.
The delivery of clinical genomics services in Wales is underpinned by the Genomic Technical Hub (GTH) which carries out the processing and testing of all samples received by the laboratory. As Head of the Technical Programme, Justyna Tull, has worked collaboratively with a range of colleagues within the service, and with partner organisations, to upscale the capability and capacity of the technical hub in order deliver comprehensive and specialist genomic services to patients in Wales.
Dr Sarah Bant, Associate Director of Workforce Transformation, Healthcare Science said:
I would like to give special mention across the winners of awards to the All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) with Justyna Tull winning ‘A recognition of excellent leadership’ for her leadership of Genetic Technologists and upscaling of the processing and testing of genetic samples. The QuicDNA project led by Sian Morgan also won ‘New ways of working’ on how the genomics service is working with ABUHB to accelerate access to genomic testing and Danielle Allan won the HEIW award for ‘Outstanding achievement’ for her leadership of the administrative team. This is an incredible achievement for the service.
HEIW are offering funding for NHS Wales staff to complete MSc level modules in genomics medicine with either Cardiff or Bangor University. Further information can be found here Genomics - HEIW (nhs.wales).
