Restorative Dentistry is a General Dental Council recognised dental specialty involving the diagnosis, treatment planning and rehabilitation of patients with complex dental needs, including the replacement of missing teeth, restoration of damaged teeth and the management of oral and dental tissues affected by disease, trauma or developmental conditions. It includes management of developmental conditions such as hypodontia, cleft lip and palate, and acquired conditions such as head and neck cancer.
Applicants are expected to be eligible for full General Dental Council registration by the time of appointment and, in most cases, to have completed Dental Core Training Year 2 or to demonstrate equivalent experience before starting specialty training.
Restorative Dentistry specialty training aligns with the current General Dental Council curriculum introduced for new trainees from September 2024. The programme is a minimum five-year full-time training programme or equivalent pro rata and includes experience across hospital-based restorative dentistry services to support progression towards a Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training.
