Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a General Dental Council recognised dental specialty concerned with the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of irregularities of the teeth, dental occlusion (bite) and growth of the face in both children and adults.

Once you have a minimum of three years post basic qualification and are fully registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) you can apply to train in the specialty of orthodontics.

Recruitment to Orthodontic training posts across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales takes place through a national selection process led by NHS England.

The first three years of orthodontic training is designed to equip the trainee with the skills necessary to practice as a specialist orthodontist. The learning outcomes are defined in the curriculum prescribed by the GDC. Years 4 and 5 of training is designed to equip the trainee with the skills necessary to hold a Consultant in Orthodontics post.
