Oral Surgery

Oral Surgery is the specialty concerned with the diagnosis, investigation, and management of conditions of the teeth, mouth, and jaws requiring surgical intervention or combined surgical and medical intervention.

This includes the removal of impacted and unerupted teeth, management of oral infections, treatment of oral pathology, pre-prosthetic surgery, and minor soft tissue procedures. Whilst primarily involving more complex treatment of both adults and children, it may also involve the management of anxious patients or those who have significant medical comorbidities. It also includes education, training and research related to the specialty.

The Oral Surgery Specialty Training Programme in Wales is a Dental Postgraduate Deanery approved programme that is accompanied by a National Training Number (NTN) and on successful completion leads to the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training (CCST).

The programme is a minimum of three years’ duration (full-time equivalent) and provides structured clinical and academic training to enable the trainee to achieve the competencies required for independent specialist roles in primary care, community and hospital services, with some trainees going on to further career development towards consultant practice, education or research.

Training posts are based within NHS Wales, typically including placements in secondary and primary care services. Trainees will rotate between sites to gain experience across a range of clinical environments and patient populations and to ensure broad clinical exposure
