Paediatric dentistry DES accreditation

Level 2 Paediatric Dentistry Accreditation 

Applications to apply directly for accreditation as a Dentist with Enhanced Skills in Paediatric Dentistry (DES Paed Dent) are open.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, with the panel meeting annually to assess all applications received prior to the cut-off date.   

 

How to apply

Your completed application form and paperwork should be submitted via secure file upload and transfer using  WeTransfer  to HEIW.DES@Wales.nhs.uk. 

Please ensure you state clearly in the subject line that your application is for Paediatric DES Accreditation. 

 

Timelines 

The anticipated timelines for 2026 application cycles is shown below. These may be subject to change. 

All applications should be submitted by midnight on the day of closing. Any submissions received beyond the cut-off will be held until the following application cycle. 

  • Application Window: 18 September 2025 – 14 September 2026  
  • Panel Assessment Window: 15 September 2026 – 6 October 2026 
  • Results Window: 7 October 2026 – 21 October 2026 
  • Appeals Window: 22 October 2026 – 19 November 2026

Level 2 Paediatric Dentistry Training 

This programme is designed to support dentists working in Wales with an interest in Paediatric Dentistry to gain the skills and experience needed to become accredited as a Dentist with Enhanced Skills in Paediatric Dentistry (DES Paed Dent) and begin providing Level 2 care with confidence. 

 
Structure of the course: 

The programme will be a 24-month part-time course, involving supervised hands-on training for one full day every month or a half-day twice a month. These placements have been pre-arranged with the Local Health Boards, trainees will not be expected to arrange their own. 

Trainees will be supported to build a portfolio of evidence, which at the end of the programme they will submit to a panel for consideration for Accreditation as a DES in Paediatric Dentistry. More details can be found in the applicant handbook below. 

The course will also include 12 group study days on relevant topics, and a peer support network.
