Student Streamlining

Student Streamlining is the all-Wales process that matches final year nursing, midwifery and Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) students to appropriate Band 5 roles across NHS Wales.

This page explains HEIW’s role and helps you find the right information quickly, including where to apply, key dates and FAQs.

Quick links

Student Streamlining is a nationally coordinated process run across NHS Wales to support a fair and transparent approach to matching eligible newly qualified students to available Band 5 roles.

NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) manages the Student Streamlining Scheme, including the application process, matching and student related FAQs.

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) commissions the vast majority of healthcare education for NHS Wales. It supports the programme by working with partners across Wales to help ensure streamlining communications are clear, consistent and student focused.

NHS Wales Health Boards and Trusts are the employers and determine the number of roles available based on service need and workforce planning requirements.

During the Streamlining window, students:

  • Complete one Streamlining application via the matching website (applications are not submitted through NHS Jobs or Trac).
  • Can express preferences (for example location and role), although preferences cannot be guaranteed.
  • Are considered for roles that reflect confirmed service need and workforce requirements identified by NHS Wales Health Boards and Trusts.
  • Streamlining does not guarantee a specific role or location, but it provides a fair and structured national process.
  • If not allocated a role through Matching (Phase 1), students will be supported through the Additional Allocation (Phase 2) as further opportunities become available.

For the latest confirmed dates and milestones please refer to the official Streamlining timeline hosted by NWSSP
