Study Day Programme

The Programme consists of 10-12 study days, which will generally be held on Wednesdays, with a few being held on Thursdays and Fridays.  The Programme is aimed at helping in many areas, especially the clinical and treatment skills that are required for successful general practice.  

The Educational Supervisor must offer proper educational support including allowing the Foundation Therapist to attend the 10-12 study days and to complete the relevant areas of the training portfolio.  The Educational Supervisor must not insist on the Foundation Therapist working in the practice at this time. The study days are included as part of the working week.

The Foundation Therapist must follow the Educational Supervisor’s reasonable instructions.  This is central to a professional relationship between an Educational Supervisor and a Foundation Therapist.  

All practices will be required to ensure that at least 50% of the dental therapist’s clinical time is spent carrying out restorative treatment and no more than one hour a day will be given to private patients.

If any private work is undertaken, the fees will accrue to the Educational Supervisor.  The patient should be given a clear explanation of the nature of the contract under which they are being treated.

The start time for each day is indicated in the Timetable.  It is worth remembering that this is the time at which the first session will begin and that you will be expected to be present before the start time.

You will be able to claim travel expenses to and from study days (for those travelling greater distances, claims can be made for an overnight stay).  It is important to make your claims as soon as possible after attending a study day.  Receipts must be provided where appropriate.

The structure of the course is not rigid and can be directed to cover any area that you require, so speak to the Programme Director who will see what can be done to accommodate your wishes.  

Enjoy your training – it will be like most things – the more you put into it the more you will get out!  Problems can and will be sorted out quickly if they are identified, so speak to your Educational Supervisor, the Training Programme Director or the WDTFT Administrative Officer – they are there to help.
