Study Day Programme

The Educational Supervisor must offer educational support including allowing the Foundation Therapist to attend the 10-12 study days and to complete the relevant areas of the training e-portfolio.  The Educational Supervisor must not insist on the Foundation Therapist working in the practice at this time. The study days are included as part of the working week.

The Foundation Therapist must follow the Educational Supervisor’s reasonable instructions.  This is central to a professional relationship between an Educational Supervisor and a Foundation Therapist.

All practices will be required to ensure that at least 50% of the dental foundation therapist’s clinical time is spent carrying out restorative treatment and no more than one hour a day will be given to private patients.

If any private work is undertaken, the fees will accrue to the Educational Supervisor.  The patient should be given a clear explanation of the nature of the contract under which they are being treated.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER FOR STUDY DAYS:

Time of sessions                  9 am – 12 pm                    1 pm – 4 pm

There may be some variation in these times

If your Foundation Therapist is ill, they are asked to let you and the WDTFT Administrative Officer know straight away.  This can be the only reason for not attending.  Interviews and personal arrangements should be organised outside these times.

Please note, any absence from a study day will be notified to the Educational Supervisor.

The WDTFT Programme has a Training Programme Director (TPD) and an

Administrative Officer.  There will be local centres at which study days are held, namely the Postgraduate Training Unit at Prince Charles Hospital and the Routledge Centre at Llandough Hospital.

The study day programme has a blended approach, with some courses being delivered face to face, with hands on and a few as online sessions.

The times, with venues, of the sessions will be outlined in the study day Timetable, which will be provided to you by the Administrative Officer prior to the training year commencing.  The start time for each study day is indicated in the Timetable.

Attendance at all Study Days is compulsory. Some days are held jointly with Foundation Dentists and some days are held at external venues.

The Programme consists of 10-12 study days, which will generally be held on Wednesdays, with a few being held on Thursdays and Fridays.  The Programme is aimed at helping in many areas, especially the clinical and treatment skills that are required for successful general practice.

Educational Supervisors are welcome to attend any study day they feel may be of value.

The structure of the course is not rigid and can be directed to cover any area that is required by the Foundation Therapist.

The Training Portfolio

Part of your role as an Educational Supervisor will be to engage in your Foundation Therapist Trainee’s e-portfolio and complete necessary work items in a timely manner. The e-portfolio website address is https://dentaleportfolio.hee.nhs.uk/.

Details of the e-portfolio will be given to the Educational Supervisor and Foundation Therapist at the start of the Programme.

Treatments and work carried out and various details including number of patients seen, teaching programme directorial time, hours worked and various aspects of the month’s activity will be recorded.  This is designed to provide reflective learning to the Foundation Therapist and be an aid to self-management.  The Educational Supervisor and Training Programme Director will have input into the e-portfolio but it is not summatively assessed.  It is, however, an essential element of the Programme and suitable time and attention must be given to the e-portfolio.

If you have any issues in relation to the e-portfolio, please contact Rachel Morgan (HEIW) Rachel.Morgan30@wales.nhs.uk.

Certification

CPD hours will be given to the Foundation Therapist for each study day attended, via HEIW’s Learning Management System, known as Y Ty Dysgu.

At the end of the appointment, the Postgraduate Dental Dean will issue a Certificate of Completion to the Foundation Therapist.
