Healthcare science related training programmes

This page is for those that have not worked in NHS healthcare science roles before and are a student on a training programme.

Practitioner training programmes

Degree programmes such as practitioner training programmes, radiography and operating department practice degrees are commissioned by us at HEIW.

They're designed to lead directly to practitioner roles in NHS Wales.

The number of places depend on the number of roles likely to be available in Wales when you graduate.

Placements within this programme will be planned by the university, us and the health board or trust trainers.

Postgraduate training programmes

All specialties of the scientist training programme are open for services in Wales to request funding for:

  • either 'direct entry' which is open to applications for those that do not currently work in the local service
  • or 'in service' for their existing employees.

These depend on the future roles that are needed in the services in Wales.

When you successfully join the scientist training programme, you become an NHS Wales employee for the 3 years of the programme.
