Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is developing a new NHS Wales Succession Planning and Talent Management Strategy, building on the previous strategy which covered 2017–2027, to support a more planned and sustainable approach to future leadership across NHS Wales. The strategy will help ensure that the system is better able to identify, develop and support leaders who are prepared to take on senior roles as organisational and population needs evolve.
The refreshed strategy will provide a clearer national framework for recognising leadership potential and supporting more consistent succession planning across NHS Wales. It will help organisations take a more planned approach to identifying and developing senior leaders, while promoting greater coherence across the system.
At its heart, the strategy will support fair, inclusive and evidence-informed approaches that contribute to sustainable leadership pipelines and a high-quality healthcare system for the people of Wales, now and in the future.
By developing capable and inclusive leaders, NHS Wales is better placed to support its workforce, improve services and deliver high-quality care and better outcomes for patients.
The work will continue to be shaped through engagement with partners across NHS Wales, supporting a strategic, consistent and future-focused approach to leadership development that reflects the needs of a changing health and care system.
