Board Development

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is leading on the development of a national approach to Board Development for NHS Wales, supporting Executive and Non-Executive Directors to continue strengthening the leadership capability needed to respond to current and future system challenges.

This work recognises the critical role that Boards play in shaping strategic direction, providing effective governance, stewarding public resources and enabling the delivery of high-quality, equitable care for people across Wales.

The national Board Development offer will provide accessible development opportunities that support senior leaders to apply learning in practice, strengthen collective leadership and contribute to shared priorities across NHS Wales. It will be informed by national leadership expectations, system priorities and the evolving needs of Board members, with a focus on practical learning that supports effective decision-making, collaboration and improvement.

This work forms part of HEIW’s wider role in supporting leadership, talent and workforce development across NHS Wales. Succession planning and leadership pipeline activity will continue through other areas of HEIW’s leadership and talent management portfolio.
