Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is thrilled to launch the Allied Health Professions (AHP) Workforce Development Plan. This strategic plan is designed to address the evolving health needs of Wales’ population through an invigorated AHP workforce.

Allied Health Professions, or AHPs, are NHS Wales' third largest professional workforce. They provide a wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and support services. AHPs in Wales consist of 13 professions who work to improve public health, impacting people's physical, mental, and social well-being.

The workforce plan details 54 actions taken over the next two years, with clear timelines and deliverables. These actions ensure the workforce can access robust training, resources, pathways, flexible working environments, and a distinct identity, producing an engaged and motivated workforce.

Nicky Thomas, Associate Director for AHP Workforce Transformation said:

“The AHP Workforce Development Plan addresses the significant health challenges Wales anticipates over the next decade. Recognising the vital role of AHPs across various sectors, the plan outlines strategies to equip the workforce to meet these challenges effectively.”

The plan's successful implementation will result in high-quality, person-centred care delivered by regulated multi-professional teams and improved population health through proactive public health initiatives.

Lisa Llewellyn, Director of Nursing, Health Professionals and Quality said:

“This Allied Health Professions Workforce Development Plan is a strategic step towards empowering AHPs across Wales, ensuring they have the skills, support, and opportunities to thrive and deliver the best possible care for our communities. This workforce development plan ensures they are equipped, valued, and ready to meet the evolving needs of the people of Wales.”

By implementing this plan, the AHP workforce can transform to meet the changing health needs of the future population, ensuring high-quality patient outcomes and enabling individuals to live healthier lives for longer.
