Published 31/01/24

Applications for the Scientist Training Programme posts in Wales for 2024-27 are open until 19 February 2024.

Run by the National School for Healthcare Science, the Scientist Training Programme (STP) is a national training programme of work-based and academic learning for graduates who wish to secure a senior scientist role within the NHS.

Successful applicants to training posts in Wales will:

  • be employed on a three-year, fixed term contract by an NHS Wales Health Board or Trust
  • receive a Band 6 (Agenda for Change) salary
  • have their full academic and programme fees funded
  • be able to apply for a bursary of up to £2,000/year for additional training needs
  • be eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professional’s Council (HCPC) as a Clinical Scientist following completion of the programme.

In Wales, the programme, trainee salary and bursary are all funded by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW).

Hopeful applicants should have an honours degree (first or 2:1) in a pure or applied science, or an MSc or PhD relevant to the specialism they are applying for.

Each individual can apply for a maximum of two STP posts in Wales.

Sarah Bant, Associate Director of Workforce Transformation for Healthcare Science at HEIW, said: ”We are delighted to see so many services in Wales keen to train the clinical scientists of the future through this excellent programme.

"It is a fantastic opportunity for scientists from a huge range of education and career backgrounds to enter this essential profession in NHS Wales.”
