2027 Recruitment for Ophthalmology ST1 and Dermatology ST3 in Wales
For 2027 recruitment, a separate Wales vacancy will be advertised for Ophthalmology ST1 and Dermatology ST3.
This approach is being introduced to provide applicants who specifically wish to undertake their specialty training in Wales with a clear route to apply for a Welsh training programme. It forms part of work to strengthen recruitment and retention in Wales and to better understand the applicant cohort actively choosing Wales as their preferred place to train, while maintaining alignment with the wider specialty recruitment arrangements.
Applying online through the Oriel Recruitment System
For 2027 entry to specialty training in Ophthalmology ST1 and Dermatology ST3 there will be two advertisements within Oriel when applications open on the 22nd of October 2026 (Ophthalmology) and 19th December 2026 (Dermatology). One for England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and one for Wales.
Ophthalmology and Dermatology applicants will be able to apply for either the England, Scotland and Northern Ireland vacancy or the Wales vacancy but they cannot apply for both. As applications can only be considered for one vacancy applicants should ensure that they only apply to their preferred training location.
The Oriel system will not prevent two applications being made. At the application closing date, any applicants that have a live (i.e. not withdrawn) application to both vacancies will have the application with the earliest submission date withdrawn.
Applications withdrawn by the applicant prior to the application closing date will not count as a duplicate.
Applicants should not withdraw their own duplicate application after the application window has closed. Withdrawals should be actioned only by the relevant recruitment team.
Applicants to the Wales vacancy will follow the same scoring, longlisting, shortlisting and interview processes as applicants to the England, Scotland and Northern Ireland vacancy. For further information on the recruitment process for both specialties please see the lead recruiters websites.
