Study Day Programme

The Programme consists of 10-12 study days, which will generally be held on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  The Programme is aimed at helping in many areas, especially the clinical and treatment skills that are required for successful general practice.

The structure of the course is not rigid and can be directed to cover any area that you require, so speak to the Programme Director who will see what can be done to accommodate your wishes.

Enjoy your training – it will be like most things – the more you put into it the more you will get out!  Problems can and will be sorted out quickly if they are identified, so speak to your Educational Supervisor, the Training Programme Director or the WDTFT Administrative Officer – they are there to help.

Core topics for the WDTFT Educational Programme include:

  • Induction, including health and safety in practice

  • Infection control

  • Radiography and radiology

  • Direct restorations

  • Child protection, disability discrimination and safeguarding

  • Oral Medicine

  • Consent

  • HIW legislation

  • Conflict resolution

  • Clinical record-keeping

  • Medical Emergencies

Other important topics may be delivered, such as:

  • Communication skills
  • Dealing with complaints
  • Team working

The Training Portfolio

Completion of the Portfolio will be via an e-portfolio.  Details of this will be given to you and your Educational Supervisor at the start of the Programme.

Treatments and work carried out and various details including number of patients seen, teaching Programme Directorial time, hours worked and various aspects of the month’s activity will be recorded.  This is designed to provide reflective learning and be an aid to self-management.  The Educational Supervisor and Training Programme Director will have input into the Portfolio but it is not summativly assessed.  It is, however, an essential element of the Programme and suitable time and attention must be given to the Portfolio.

Certification

CPD hours will be given for each study day attended, via HEIW’s Learning Management System, known as Y Ty Dysgu.

At the end of the appointment, the Postgraduate Dental Dean will issue a Certificate of Completion to the Foundation Therapist.
